Previously Google Meet is a paid service and was part of the G-suite, but since the people are using online communications more than ever, Google brought Meet to Gmail and made it available for desktop users first, desktop users will find the Meet icon on the sidebar where they can join a call or start a call.
Later Meet in Gmail was made available for mobile users as Google announced last week that iOS users can start using Meet for free through the Gmail app, and it was now made availble for Android users as well, starting from today, Android users can use Meet for free if they update to the latest version of Gmail 2020.06.28.320626991.
Google Meet will come as a separate tab in the bottom of the Gmail app, you can see all your scheduled meetings by tapping on the Meet tab, if you click on any Google Meet links, it will take you to a new screen that will show meeting details like the duration of the meeting and names of the participants.
You can select through which of your Google accounts you want to join the meeting and preview your video feed before entering the meeting. All Google Meet links will now be opened in Gmail, however, the standalone Meet app will stay and also get updates.
The "New Meeting" button in the Meet tab will give you options like "get a meeting link to share," "start an instant meeting," "Schedule in Google Calendar," "Join with a code, " and if you're a normal user and doesn't need to use Meet in your daily life, you can disable the Meet tab in the settings and use Gmail as you use it regularly.
