Google released the developer preview of Android 11, much earlier than last year, Google generally previews the first developer version of a new android in the second week of March but Google wants to give more time to Apk developers for modifying their apps for Android 11 and give early feedback to google. Google accidentally released the developer preview page last week and quickly took it down.

Google will release Android 11 beta for the general public in May, but this developer preview release is only targeted for developers, usually, beta versions of Android or any other OS will have a lot of instability and annoying bugs which makes it harder for any user to use it on daily basis, this early developer preview was not meant for usage but meant for modifying apps to suit the new features.

Google introduced a new milestone called "Platform Stability," Google expects they will reach this milestone by June which means no further changes will be done to Android 11 that will affect app developing, this will help developers to be confident in their app testing and final release, they don't have to worry about altering their apps concerning Android 11 after June.

Android 11 Developer Preview program includes tools that are required to test the existing or new apps on a variety of screen sizes, CPU/GPU chipsets, network technologies, and hardware architectures. You need to have a Pixel device to participate in the Android 11 Developer Preview program or in the beta program.

You can choose to participate in the Developer preview program by using an Android Emulator too, new features added by Google in the Android 11 developer preview include,

  • Rich media in quick replies
Starting from Android 11 users can send images and other rich media using quick replies in the notification area.

  • Secure sharing of large datasets

Previously to read large datasets, each app has to download a separate copy of that dataset but starting from Android 11 a large dataset will be cached using shared data blobs so that each app can read the cached file when required without wasting storage both on a network and on the local disk.

  • Support for low latency mode
when low latency mode is turned on, post-processing of graphics will be turned off which results in low latency when playing games and using other real-time apps, graphics post-processing will improve graphics quality but also increases latency which is not suitable for using some applications.

  • Muting notifications when using the camera
Sounds and vibrations of notifications will be muted when using the camera, this helps to reduce disturbances when recording videos.
  • Chat Bubbles
Chat bubbles are hidden under developer settings in Android 10 but now you can opt for chat bubbles for each app in the main settings menu.
  • Other privacy features
Miscellaneous privacy features include scoped storage enforcement which means only giving permission to required folder or a file but not to the entire storage of the device, one-time permissions to access camera, location, and other permissions only when required, with Background location access you can give separate permission for background access along with foreground access separately.

Android 11 was expected to release in Q3 of this year, every new Android version usually releases in august or September.
