Apple patented an system of audio processing to create virtual surrounding sound, Apple achieves this by a process of crosstalk canceler which works in the similar way of noice cancellation, previous patent by apple will allow users to hear where people are located within a room even when they are not present there.

Previous Patent is granted for Headphones but now this patent is granted for Apple MacBooks, according to the patent information the future MacBooks will have one or more processors that will process an audio signal into three paths.

How it works in headphones is, the audio signal will be sent to both ears of the listener(left or right when needed), but it's not possible to do so in normal speakers, crosstalk canceler now comes into place, it will produce sounds from different speakers means a left sound signal will be heard loudly on the left speakers and the right signal on the right speaker.

This process will include three paths,

From PatentlyApple.com

The first path has a direct gain and a direct virtual source algorithm operating on the audio signal.

The second path has a number of early reflection gains that are applied to the audio signal, which produces multiple early reflections, respectively. In addition, each of these early reflections undergoes a delay, and the early reflections are processed by an early reflections virtual source algorithm

The third path has a reverberation gain and binaural reverberation filters operating on the audio signal.

Apple actually filed the patent in 2018, this can enhance the user experience of watching Movies, TV shows, and Sports and also can be used for business purposes like for conference calls etc.
