As coronavirus forced many employes to work from home, most of the productivity was halted, and this also affected the update cycle of the Chrome browser and Chrome operating system, Jason Kersey, Director of the Technical Program Management has announced that they will skip the Chrome 82 update and will move on to Chrome 83 Update, reported by Chrome Unboxed.
Jason Kersey said that much of the testing and development of Chrome update is happening remotely, even though they are continuing to work on the feature updates of the next Chrome version, they are focused on keeping the current Chrome version stable and secure until the update delay is over.
This means all the features that appeared in Chrome 82 beta will be available in Chrome 83 update, however, skipping the next version of the Chrome operating system is not mentioned by Jason Kersey, but the first announcement made about pausing the Chrome Updates mentioned that they will pause updates for both Chrome browser and Chrome OS.
Jason Kersey said "For our upcoming releases, we’re currently evaluating what we will do for M82 which branched last week. We plan to release another Dev channel release of M82 this week to gather more stability data. For M83, we’ll continue shipping Canaries as planned, and pending the decision for M82, will begin shipping Dev channels again in the near future."
Jason Kersey said that they were hoping to provide an update in the next week regarding the future plans for resumption of releases, Chrome release team said "Our primary objectives are to ensure Chrome continues to be stable, secure, and work reliably for anyone who depends on them. We’ll continue to prioritize any updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80."
