So far Ericsson, LG, and Nvidia have withdrawn from MWC 2020.
After LG announced that they are not participating in MWC 2020 because of the outbreak of coronavirus, many companies followed the same path and announced that they will be absent at the MWC 2020, Sony and Amazon are the latest companies to do so and they are the major players in the tech industry.
The outbreak of coronavirus had an massive impact on tech world, first affected was Apple when it's iPhone production in China was halted due to the virus outbreak and also resulted in Apple closing some retail shops in China for some days, After that another major affect was on the biggest mobile show of the year.
LG is the first company to withdraw from the show, following them Nvidia announced the same and said "we regret not attending, but believe this is the right decision." companies that opted out of MWC include Ericsson, LG, Sony, Nvidia, Amazon. While these companies completely erased their plans for MWC some companies have limiting their presence at MWC.
TCL said that it cancelled the press conference at MWC but said all the other plans for MWC will stay intact, they said "this decision does not impact any other MWC 2020 activities planned by the company and TCL will still announce its latest mobile devices and showcase them at its booth."
Other companies like Xiaomi, ZTE have said that they will take necessary cautions to protect they're employees and follow all the regulation given by GSMA to ensure safe environment at MWC 2020, Samsung was also rumored to be limiting their activities at MWC 2020 and will reduce the employees that will attend MWC on the company's behalf.
Sony said in the statement released on the Company's website "Sony has been closely monitoring the evolving situation following the novel coronavirus outbreak, which was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization on January 30th, 2020. As we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our customers, partners, media and employees, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from exhibiting and participating at MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain."
But Sony will live stream the scheduled Press conference on Feb 24 on Sony Xperia's YouTube channel. Amazon in an e-mail sent to Tech Crunch said "due to the outbreak and continued concerns about novel coronavirus, Amazon will withdraw from exhibiting and participating in Mobile World Congress 2020, scheduled for Feb. 24-27 in Barcelona, Spain."
Ericsson is another company which withdrew from MWC 2020, they said "After an extensive internal risk assessment, Ericsson has decided to take further precautionary measures by withdrawing from MWC Barcelona 2020, the largest event in the telecom industry.Ericsson appreciates that GSMA have done everything they can to control the risk." And the company will "take the demos and content created for MWC Barcelona to customers in their home markets with local events called 'Ericsson Unboxed'."
In the midst of all the ciaos GSMA, which organizes MWC, stick with it's decision to organize the show anyway and continue to take every necessary measure they can, to stop the spread of coronavirus at MWC, they previously urged the exhibitors and visitors to follow a 'no-handshake policy' and implemented microphone disinfecting and change protocol for all speakers.
Now in order to further improve safety measures, GSMA took the following steps, all travellers from the Hubei province will not be permitted access to the event, travellers who have been in China will need to demonstrate proof they have been outside of China 14 days prior to the event.
MWC will take place in Barcelona starting from Feb 24th - 27th.
