Amazon sells most smart speakers in US smart speaker market, Amazon Echo devices are the most sold smart speakers in US, reported by eMarketer, Amazon holds 69.7% market share in smart speaker market followed by google with 31.7% market share and 18.4% market share for other smart speakers brands.
One thing to be noted is if you sum the percentage of the above smart speaker market shares of different companies, it exceeds the mark of 100% which is because some people use more than just one smart speaker brand in their homes, other brands in the 18.4% market share include Apple HomePod, Harmon Kardon Invoke and Sonos One.
Amazon Echo device is a go-to device for some people because beside the functions of typical smart speaker activities you can add items to your Amazon shopping lists and also directly order products from your Echo device, Amazon Prime users are more likely will get an Echo device if they choose to buy a smart speaker.
eMarketer notes that Echo's sales in some countries outside US are less due to it's lack of support for non-English languages than other other smart phone speakers.
Victoria Petrock, a principal analyst at eMarketer said,
"Since Amazon first introduced the Echo, it has built a convincing lead in the US and continues to beat back challenges from top competitors," Victoria Petrock said "We had previously expected Google and Apple to make more inroads in this market, but Amazon has remained aggressive. By offering affordable devices and building out the number of Alexa skills, the company has maintained Echo’s appeal."eMarketer also notes that since voice assistants are included in other devices like vehicles, appliances and other smart-home components, the overall growth in US smart speaker users will slow down in the next several years. eMarketer estimates 83.1 million smart speaker users this year which will be a 13.7% YoY growth.
Although this YoY growth will reduce to single digits in 2021, according to the estimates of eMarketer, they also expects a 30.5% raise from 28.9% of internet users who currently use smart speakers.
Victoria Petrock said
"Smart speakers were designed as entry-level devices to get more people used to voice-controlled technology," Petrock said. "Over time, we’ll see slowing growth in the number of smart speakers as people turn to voice assistants built into other things within homes, vehicles and on-the-go. Amazon’s next challenge will be to maintain its dominance in these other environments as well."
