WhatsApp, which started as an messing app now has over two billion users worldwide, WhatsApp announced on their blog. WhatsApp is an messaging app which you can use to chat and video call, recently a new feature also added called 'WhatsApp Pay' for digital payments. In the same blog while announcing this rear feat, WhatsApp also mentioned about the security steps it follows to protect the users privacy.
WhatsApp was created by Brian Acton and Jan Koum in 2009 and was later acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, Facebook's highest acquisition by that time, WhatsApp now operates under Facebook, so far Facebook has highest number of users worldwide with almost 2.5 billion users, WhatsApp will now have the second place in the list.
WhatsApp is popular in Asia with most of it's user base in India with over 340 million users, but WhatsApp user base in western countries like USA is very low because of the popular services like iMessages and also the fact that texting in US is very easy and low of cost when compared to some Asian countries, texting is often costly in some Asian countries.
When WhatsApp entered in to the market as an texting alternative, users quickly started using WhatsApp instead of the classic SMS service and WhatsApp quickly rose to popularity, texting is WhatsApp is free and you chat with people anywhere in the world, WhatsApp also provides video calling option to the users, later in the years WhatsApp adopted 'Status' feature where you can post stories with a limit of 24 hours just like in Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp, in the blog has talked more about the security features and encryption of messages sent between one another.
WhatsApp said in the blog "That is why every private message sent using WhatsApp is secured with end-to-end encryption by default. Strong encryption acts like an unbreakable digital lock that keeps the information you send over WhatsApp secure, helping protect you from hackers and criminals. Messages are only kept on your phone, and no one in between can read your messages or listen to your calls, not even us. Your private conversations stay between you."
WhatsApp also said that "WhatsApp started with the goal of creating a service that is simple, reliable, and private for people to use. Today we remain as committed as when we started, to help connect the world privately and to protect the personal communication of two billion users all over the world."
