Essential is a company started by Andy Rubin, who is a co-creator of Android, after his departure from Google. The first and only phone released under Essential is Essential PH-1, we have seen no successor for PH-1 but Essential managed to push software updates to the phone till now, sometimes as fast as Google.

Essential Ph-1's OS is near Stock Android, in last October Essential announced Project GEM, an skinny phone which looks like a TV remote, focused on reframing the perspective on mobile. Essential released an update on it's blog about the progress of Project GEM and also an update on Essential status.

In the blog Essential talked about their vision on inventing a mobile computing paradigm that more seamlessly integrated with people’s lifestyle needs and says the despite their best affects they only managed to develop Project GEM as far as they can, and said  they've regrettably have no clear path to deliver it to customers.

The company says that in part of closing down Essential they've released a final software update to PH-1, "the security update for PH-1 released on February 3 is the last update from the Essential software team," said the company in it's blog. Not only will Essential PH-1 will stop receiving software updates, customer support will also end for the phone.

Andy Rubin left Google with a $90 million severance package, he started this company after he left Google, due to his relation with Android Operating System, Essential phone also had near stock Android experience and received frequent software updates from Essential. Newton  Mail is an service provided by Essential and the company says that it will also shutdown the Newton Mail after April 30, 2020.
